There are a number of similarities between the present and past tenses when examining present/past perfect, present/past simple, present/past continuous, and present/past perfect continuous. Aside from irregular verbs needing to be memorized, teaching students about appropriate usages of these tenses will help them to apply tenses logically and intentionally. It is important to note that often tenses in the past, like the past simple, can be confused with tenses in the present, like present perfect. For this example, explain that the present perfect relates to the past in the present, whereas the past simple is a completed action in the past and does not carry forward. Using activate stage ideas like telling stories about the past, or describing past situations in relation to one another, will help student use different past tenses in conjunction with one another, solidifying their understanding even further.
