Unit 14 is about lesson materials that will help with the teaching of a lesson and the use of course books. An advantage of using a course book is that it is often expected by the students and it provides a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary and skills work with continuity and progression. However, it doesn't always fit the specific needs and interests of all the class members and it can stop teachers from being creative. I have learned that we can use authentic and created materials in the classroom that are often more relevant and interesting compared to a course book. Some examples of authentic materials are newspapers, magazines, menus and brochures. They are real and students gain confidence when they understand them. Created materials are usually designed by the teacher and can be graded to the level of the students. Some examples of created materials are crosswords, flashcards and word search puzzles.
