The structure of past tenses is the same as that of present tenses with the one exception being that it is a past time period. The same rules apply, where continuous forms are identified by the inclusion of the verb 'to be' and the 'ing' form of the verb. If 'to be' is in present form, then it is present continuous, whereas, if 'to be' is in past form, it is past continuous. Likewise, all perfect forms contain the verb 'to have' plus past participle form of the verb, and if 'to have' is in present form, it is present perfect, whereas, if 'to have' is in past form it is past perfect. Perfect continuous follows the same rules as those written above of the perfect forms, with the addition of 'been' following 'to have' along with the 'ing' form of the verb, and just like perfect forms, if 'to have; is in present form, then it is present perfect continuous, whereas past form of 'to have' is past perfect continuous.
