I learned that the first lesson is critical with regards to setting the tone and establishing what can be expected of the class. There are 2 types of class that the teacher will encounter when giving his first lesson. One where the students already know each other and are familiar with the ESA methodolgy, and the other where the students will be meeting their fellow students and yourself for the first time and have no concept of the ESA methodology. In the first class it is important for the students to establish rapport amongst themselves and for the teacher to do likewise with the students, assess language levels/ability of the of the students (often it can be different)and be prepared to plan activities around this, i.e maybe pairing stronger students with weaker ones for certain activities., gauge motivation, needs and expectations etc. of the students by asking them questions and doing a needs analysis.
