By applying the ESA teaching method for how to teach vocabulary and grammar we can look at how to set up some classroom lessons. Generally speaking, grammar acts like the trunk and branches of a tree. Whereas vocabulary and functions are the leaves that decorate the tree. When teaching vocabulary one must look at the similarity to the student's own language, similarity to English words already known, spelling, pronunciation, and appropriacy for how hard it could be for the students. For the grammar note the meaning, usage, forms patterns, and differences between written and spoken for how hard it could be for the students to learn. Functions are used to invite, refuse, agree, disagree, and suggest. Teaching functions allows the student to learn how to naturally communicate and respond in English. Looking at some teaching examples will help to understand how to effectively teach grammar, vocabulary, and functions.
