This unit covers the different kinds of materials that teachers can use in the classroom: coursebooks, authentic materials, and created materials. It discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each kind of material and also provides suggestions on how a teacher can best utilize a combination of these materials in lessons.
I learned that although a coursebook is good to use in the classroom, it is not a perfect material--and therefore, it should be supplemented with authentic materials and/or created materials to best suit the needs of the students. A teacher shouldn't be afraid to even omit or replace coursebook material that may not be suitable to the level/interest of the students; other appropriate material can be used instead. In short, a good teacher will incorporate a combination of materials in instruction to meet their students' needs as well as to engage and motivate their students throughout lessons.
