This unit highlights the importance of reading and listening, and the specialist skills required to do so successfully. When I as a teacher select a text for my students, I must select texts suited to the abilities of the students, incorporating a suitable number of new words to be learned. My topic should be interesting enough to motivate discussion, and should lend itself to showing pictures or videos to elicit foreknown knowledge. It should also promote understanding and the practicing of different skills. After the important Engage stage which sets up the enthusiasm to learn, lesson plans should alternate Study and Activate stages allowing the chosen texts to guide the flow of learning throughout the stages. Study material should always be varied and interesting to the students. As always, it is vital that each lesson is studied for its effectiveness and suggestions of improvements are recorded for future use.
