My question is why educational theories are often all or nothing. A language teacher, it would seem to me, would do best to employ every method of teaching introduced in this unit for a well-rounded approach to teaching a foreign language. Even grammar translation which seems not to offer much in terms of learning a new language, serves the purpose of becoming familiar with the new language's way of expressing ideas - in other words I believe it's a good thing to see both languages together to get a sense of how certain phrases are used in the native and new language. I find it works for me with the language I am currently learning. It's not \"teaching\" me the new language but it's essential to me to see how a sentence in English is expressed in the new language. Each method introduces some skill which I think can help the learner pick up information to make understanding the new language and speaking it possible.
