Lesson 3 covered several of the methods which have been commonly used in the teaching of English to non-native speakers. By studying the materials provided I learned a lot about the different methodologies which have historically been used and some of their strengths and weaknesses as teaching methods. The chapter also offered an overview of the ESA method which is presently the preferred method for English instruction of non-native speakers according to the text. Having included this section along with the overview made it more difficult for me to follow some of what the text was getting at. It may have been made easier to understand had the section on ESA been its own chapter in the text. All in all, the chapter was useful for me in terms of familiarizing myself with the various methods in use in the field of English language instruction and has provided me with a much needed blueprint for basic lesson planning.
