In this unit I explored learning and developmental theories related to teaching English to two groups of young people--ages 5-9 and ages 9-13. Understanding the theories gave me an overall perspective on what is most effective, and age-appropriate for all phases of lesson planning. A review of Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development gave actual recommendations for practical ways to teach in each of the four stages in his theory. A beginning study of the differences between language acquisition and language learning and age-related aspects of language acquisition in D. Singleton's work gave me a start on developing a deeper understanding of the dynamics of language learning. Viewing the levels of skills chart gave me a concrete view of goals and skills which can be used as lesson objectives. Finally, the \"likes and dislikes\" of the two age groups will help me \"get real\" with the young students I'll face someday.
