This unit covers two types of productive skills that we as teachers need to develop as well as receptive skills. There are two types of productive skills: Speaking and Writing.
The goal of a good teacher is to encourage students to speak, creating the atmosphere where they would be willing to interact, they need to have a purpose for speaking, they need to want to listen and to share what they already know. Among techniques that encourage interaction we can name pair work, group work, communication games, debates and role plays.
It is important to distinguish between the activities aimed at training fluency and accuracy. Accuracy based activities are usually used during the Study stage, as they demand guidance from the teacher, and Fluency activities take place during the Activation stage, when students get the hold of the language they use, creating the content while the teacher performs mainly the monitoring role.
