As someone who has published on the role of engagement in education, I continue to be impressed with the lessons described and modeled in this curriculum. I really appreciate that the designers have focused on having students discover the vocabulary through engagement activities and then follow up with study sessions that serve the role of codifying what the students have discovered about the language. I am even more impressed by the emphasis on boomerang and patchwork lesson sequences, as that is how I run my classroom; sometimes an engagement activity needs to be followed up by activation before slowing down to study what is being done.
As a coach, I always tried to work whole-part-whole, and it seems that this is effectively what the ESA planning does very effectively, allowing students to encounter the language, be it vocabulary or structure through high interest activities before practice and further play/use.
