This unit covers teaching receptive skills which include reading and listening. We learned that some may think we read and listen with ours eyes and ears, when infact its with our mind. The mind uses the knowledge that pre-exists in our brains to help with understanding. There are numerous techniques that we use to read and listen. These techniques range from scanning to skimming, and so on. At times there are problems with listening and reading that students may come across. For every problem there are solutions. Different solutions can be used to help students understand. The solutions include pre-teaching vocabulary and the careful selection of texts. When teaching receptive skills a teacher should always vary the type of material to keep the students interested. There are many techniques, but in the end there is only one goal. This goal is the students comprehension of the material and the English language.
