In this unit, I learned about modals, phrasal verbs, and the passive voice. The modal auxiliary verbs are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb. They’re used to express obligation, possibility/probability, permission/prohibition, ability, and advice. The passive voice is used when the performer of an action is either not known, not important, or we don’t want to say who it is. In this voice, the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. It takes the form of auxiliary verb ‘be’ (conjugated as needed) + past participle. Clauses are groups of words containing a subject and verb, and can be broken down into three categories: independent, dependent, and relative. Phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs that consist of a verb plus one or two particles and operate as one verb. These can be categorized into intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable.
