The teaching of the English language has evolved over centuries of years with many methods still in place. The ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method is a successful method taught by ITTT that incorporates many of the styles that came before it.
The ESA method motivates students, exposes them to slightly challenging material building on the knowledge they have already acquired, and then presents an environment for them to put to all the knowledge they have so far in a realistic context. For children that could be games, for adults and advanced learners it could be a full on classroom debate.
ESA can become ineffective if it is repeated ESA ESA all the time. The teacher should incorporate different combinations of the three phases, whether in a \"boomerang\" pattern or a \"patchwork.\" These varying lesson plans keep things interesting and keeps the brain from becoming accustomed to the exact same pattern every time.
