This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit covers strategies for teaching receptive skills. Four basical skills in any language are receptive skills (reading and listening) and productive skills (speaking and writing. All are equally important. Reading and listening can be done for either a purpose or for entertainment. We read and listen using a number of specialist skills including: predictive skills, scanning, skimming, and deduction. Sentence length, world length and number of unfamiliar words present problems for learning of English. Pre-teaching vocabulary and careful selection of texts helps students. To motivate students we must select topics that they will find interesting. Interest can be created through engage phase activities like predicting what the text will be about and showing pictures. Providing comprehensive tasks promote understanding as well. The unit gives an example of a typical receptive skills lesson using the patchwork format.
