This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit, I learned that pronunciation is often neglected when teaching English, but it is an area that students are concerned about. Phonology means the study of sounds, and can cover areas such as rhythm, stress and intonation. Intonation refers to variances in pitch and volume throughout a sentence, and it can carry a wide range of different messages. There are ways to teach patterns of intonation, including using gestures, making marks on the board or singing. Stress refers to the strong part of a word or one word in a sentence. There are rules that relate to stress in words of varying numbers of syllables, but it's better for the student to learn them on a case-by-case basis. English is not pronounced exactly as it is spelled, and often the pronunciation can vary, which is called dropping, linking, extra lettering or sound changing. The dictionary and phonemic alphabet can help students with their pronunciation.
