This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 15 introduced me to a notion that I hadn't thought of yet throughout my TEFL certification; namely the possibility that students of mine will have to take an international exam. With that in mind, its possible that my schools also will ask me to prepare students for these tests, which seem to be largely multiple-choice. I think I imagined that I would have more autonomy over the coursework that we're covering, but I suppose tests like the TOEFL are just a way of the world for which we haven't yet designed a better alternative. Standardized tests are crude instruments, and don't necessarily reflect a person's true knowledge, but rather memory or even sheerly their ability to take a test under pressure. As a teacher I hope I can get them comfortable both with the fundamentals of English (so that they'll deserve to pass the exams) and test-taking, so that they'll be able to handle an external exam should the time come.
