Unit 14 is about the types of books and materials used for teaching EFL courses, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Authentic, or real-world, materials are great for student confidence and interest levels, but have to be vetted carefully for content that is relevant and accessible to the language level of the class. Created materials, on the other hand, are designed for specific language points and learner levels, but often lack the variety and relevance that authenticity offers. Put simply, they can become canned and boring. EFL course books are the other major concern of this unit. They offer stability and resources, but quite often lack relevance and specificity. The course book can also become a crutch for the teacher, getting in the way of creative, interactive, and considered lesson planning. I appreciated the resources and suggestions given for selecting, developing, and modifying materials for EFL use.
