From this unit I have learnt that there different reasons and ways in which we read and listen depending on the information we wish to know.
It is good to understand these types of reading and listening in order to help students appreciate that they must not always have to understand every word of a text or listening exercise, that sometimes it can be enough to get the gist.
It has also highlighted to me the importance of pre existing knowledge of the world to get a full understanding of what we hear and read.
When planning a lesson it is also critical to give serious thought to the reading and listening materials used and to think ahead as to the words which the students may have problems understanding. By planning well it will allow the teacher to pre teach some more difficult vocabularly before the students read or listen to the materials, this hopefully gives the students more confidence to follow the text or dialogue.
