In my opinion transaction based, teacher-focused learning is antiquated in nature and does not engage students in the learning process; thus, potentially not maximizing the learning opportunities. For students to best learn, apply, and think critically about new skills and how to best use them, activity based learning is most effective, in my experience.
I currently use methodologies similar to Presentation, Practice, and Production and Engage, Study, Activate in my current role as a corporate trainer. I find that when students have the learned the content, and been given an opportunity to apply it with proper feedback, they are much more engaged in the training session, excited about their own ability to use the skills, and are more apt to apply this knowledge in their occupational setting. I look forward to refining my skill set with these methodologies and developing creative ways to engage and apply the study material.
