In unit 14, I learnt that newspaper articles, recording of a radio interview and menu from a local restaurant are examples of authentic materials. Also, created materials can be graded for language level, they can be targeted to specific teaching aims and also can be adopted to the needs of the students. One disadvantage of using a course book in the classroom is that course books are written for a general audience rather than a specific group of students. The following are some facts about the use of course books; teachers should adapt the materials to meet the needs of their students, replace unsuitable activities with similar, more relevant ideas and a good teacher will supplement the course book with extra material to reinforce understanding and teachers should not base all their lessons around the material in the course book.
An advantage of using course book in the classroom is that they provide a tried and tested syllabus.
