This unit covers mainly two important topics of the English language, pronunciation and Phonology.
Pronunciation is very important as part of studying English but many times teachers don't give it a lot of time in their lessons. Under Pronunciation is intonation which is the variation in the volume, pitch and emphasis used when constructing sentences. When a sentence is said without intonation it lacks meaning. Articulation on the other hand explains how a word is spoken. This is part of phonology. A word may be written one way but it doesn't mean it's spoken the same way. With the help of the phonemic alphabet a word will be articulated the right way.
Phonology refers to the study of the science, analysis and classification of the physical properties of sounds. Articulation, Phonology, Intonation are all part of pronunciation. With good knowledge of all of them, you have good knowledge of pronunciation of the English language.
