This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit discussed the use of conditionals and reported speech, and how to teach them. From my own experiences, conditionals are something that I believe are difficult for anyone to learn in a different language. The biggest problem lies with the difference between potential situations and hypothetical situations. Generally, you would use one conditional for one, and a different conditional for another. English complicates things by letting ‘if’ be used for both the potential and hypothetical, and then further complicates things with the third and mixed conditionals. The material gave a good explanation of each, and different ways to teach them. It then went on to discuss reported and direct speech in English. Changing between tenses when reporting speech causes ESL students a lot of problems, but I feel more capable to teach this subject after reading the material. The graph explaining time expressions was also useful.
