Unit 7 discussed a range of considerations relevant to the provision of instruction in receptive language skills -- i.e. reading and listening. The author began by highlighting some basic motivations for acquiring and utilizing receptive language skills; these motivations were said to be broadly divisible into those pertaining to some \"purpose\" and those pertaining to \"entertainment.\" The author also described a number of skills essential to success in reading and listening -- e.g. prediction and deduction from context. Finally, the author set out a number of strategies for ensuring that classroom instruction in the receptive skills is approachable and engaging for students. Such strategies include pre-teaching any problematic words or structures, selecting texts that are appropriate both to the students' level and to their interests, and appointing comprehension tasks that are challenging without being dry or overly difficult.
