This unit covered teaching receptive skills. These are listening and reading. Sometimes receptive skills are used for a purpose, and sometimes for entertainment. Both use different skills and methods. Some strategies for reading were discussed, including the use of prediction, scanning, skimming, as well as reading or listening for detail and making inferences from the material. In designing the lesson, it is important that level-appropriate material be selected. A mix of topics should be used throughout the year to appeal to different students’ interests. An Engage phase can include enjoying a famous piece of music or film, which can spark a small discussion. The Study phase can then pre-teach vocabulary from the primary material that will be covered in the next Study phase. Activate phases can have the students first create material similar to the source material, and then present it to the class. This can be a part of a game.
