This unit outlines the steps taken in the teaching of receptive skills which are reading and listening. It teaches us the two main categories of reading and listening, those being reading and listening for a purpose and listening and reading for entertainment. An example of the first would be reading the instructions for a new piece of tech so that you can learn how to operate it. An example of the second is reading a novel or listening to jokes. It shows us the different ways in which we read and listen, such as reading the headline or introduction to a text and predicting the content of it, scanning a newspaper to find out information relevant to you ignoring unwanted information. This unit also tells us some of the problems associated with only focusing on listening and reading. This unit once again ties everything together by showing us the ESA methods which can be used to help students to get a better understanding of the topic.
