Unit 11 is about the two receptive skills- reading and listening, their importance and the reasons for reading and listening. Further more the unit exposes us to the ways we use those skill and the issues we may have with them.
The reasons for reading and listening can be divided in two broad categories: for purpose and for entertainment.
How we ready or listen is determined by the reason for reading or listening. Few of the techniques used are prediction, scanning, skimming, deduction, and detail reading/ listening.
Some of the problems that a language learner may encounter are mainly due to the language content, the topic or the vocabulary level.
The basic ways that can be used by a English teacher to enable receptive skills of the students are: to choose material related to the student's interests; to build their interest before teaching; pre- teach vocabulary or grammar that may be needed; variety of the study materials; etc.
