This unit covers - from a historical perspective, the different approaches, methods, and techniques for teaching the English language to ESL students. The unit also covers the major disadvantages and advantages of each approach. Finally, the unit presents the ESA approach to English language teaching, one which was developed by Jeremy Harmer in the early 1990s and which incorporates many valuable features from previous approaches. I learned a great deal of new material (particularly the origins and history of approaches to teaching English) but what struck me as most interesting was, according to the video, it all started as a classical method of TRANSLATING Greek and Latin written TEXT into equivalent TEXT in the English language. However, text translation has its own and a much different theory than theories of teaching English for communication, specifically, speaking in English. The world of language studies is indeed, vast!
