Unit 11 covers the teaching of receptive skills. Those are reading and listening abilities.
The reasons why we read and listen are two: The first one is because we have a purpose, we need to achieve a goal, for example, reading before taking a test, the object is passing the test. The second reason is for entertainment, we listen or read different materials because we enjoy doing it. The goal of story books or TV series is to please people.
When the students are reading or listening they will probably not understand everything, the teacher can deal with this problem by explaining the meaning of the most important words for the understanding of the content.
The teacher must select interesting material for the students. If the topic covered by those materials is not attractive to all, the engaging activities need to be.
The tasks shouldn't be too easy or too difficult, and they demand to promote understanding rather than just test it.
