This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit was about teaching vocabulary, grammar, and functions. To me, learning vocabulary is very important. Although I learned French and Spanish, I'm terrible at speaking it because my productive vocabulary is seriously lacking. I know that speaking is always the hardest part about learning a language, and I believe that is partly because of underdeveloped productive vocabularies. However, grammar and language functions are equally as important. Just because you know a lot of random words, doesn't mean that you will be able to use the effectively. I believe it is important to teach both together. Obviously if you're talking about how to ask for directions or whatnot, you're not going to teach the students the colors at the same time. You're going to teach them vocabulary for different places (library, school, beach, etc...) There are many good ideas in this unit for teaching that I will definitely be using in my future classroom.
