Unit 2 - Parts of Speech
In this unit I learned about the importance of the 8 major parts of speech in English grammar: nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, prepositions/conjunctions.
Every single word in the English language belongs to one of the parts of speech; knowing the different parts of speech is important in understanding how words can and should be joined together to make sentences that are grammatically correct.
As a teacher, you should have a good understanding of this important subject, to know how to identify each category and to know how to address them to your students as well. It is important that the students recognize word order and sentence structure. Just because a student knows a word doesn't mean he or she knows how to use it in a sentence. The parts of speech are the building blocks of sentences. Each part of speech explains not what the words is, but how the word is used.
