In unit five, I learned about managing classes. Although I naturally used many of the techniques in this unit(control of voice, use of gestures, maintain eye contact), it was really great to see in detail how and why each of these techniques help make a lesson more productive. I particularly liked the grouping of the students section as I struggled with finding an effective means to increasing student talk time amongst themselves and not just having a lesson focused on teacher and student talk time. Maintaining discipline was also an important section for me. Currently I co-teach with another teacher however, as I advance further within the teaching field, I know that I will become more of a presence and lead more of my own lessons. Prior to reading this, I would generally just depend on the co-teacher to handle the discipline, but now I know that I must also take part in maintaining control as necessary within the class.
