This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit introduced the two receptive skills, listening and reading, and how to use them in a lesson. It defined the difference between using receptive skills for entertainment and using receptive skills for a purpose, and how this may influence learning. It also talked about the importance of using our background knowledge to aid in comprehension. This is particularly important for ESL learners as they often come from countries with very different cultures than in English-speaking countries, which can make understanding context difficult. This makes choosing appropriate texts very important; there is no point using a text if ESL students cannot understand the context without being explicitly taught within the same lesson. It also discussed anticipating any issues the students may have with vocabulary, and pre-teaching to help aid in the comprehension of the text. Overall, this unit was a good overview of how to teach receptive skills.
