This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
When learning a language, we first learn to listen, speak, read, and write. When separating these skills, reading and writing are considered receptive skills while speaking and writing are productive skills.
This unit was on productive skills and there are two distinct topics under this skill:
Accuracy is correct usage of vocabulary and grammar. This is usually in the study phase. Fluency is the ability to continue speaking without any interruptions. Both are equally important. This is usually in the activate phase. Despite the difference, both are equally significant.
There are times when students are reluctant to participate in speaking due to lack of confidence or interest, intimidation, past and present fear of mistakes, and cultural reasons. Nonetheless, these can all be countered through pair or group work, controlled and guided practices, giving plenty of time to the class, careful planning, and diversifying classroom dynamics.
