Conditionals are sentences containing 'if' and sometimes 'when', referring to past, present and future possibilities. There are five different conditionals with different forms and usages. The zero conditional refers to actions and facts that are irrefutable. The first conditional refers to a real situation in the future that's possible or certain once the condition is satisfied. The second conditional refers to a hypothetical future situation that is not true and unlikely to ever be true. The third conditional refers to a hypothetical past action and the hypothetical consequence. The mixed conditional refers to a hypothetical past action and the present consequence. Direct speech and reported speech is an area where students make many mistakes. When direct speech is turned into reported speech, the verbs change, as well as the tense (in most circumstances). Time expressions can also change in converting direct speech to reported speech.
