This unit covers the use of existing course materials and creation of your own teaching materials for the classroom and the advantages and disadvantages of both. A course book can have a lot of advantages such as keeping to a tried and tested method of teaching and having testing materials available to judge the progress of the group. Its important to understand that the course material is simply a tool for the teacher to use and should be deviated from if the material isn't relevant.I learnt from this unit that good Vocabulary is very important especially at the early stages when students are motivated to learn the basic words. ESA techniques (Engage, Study and Activate) are very helpful and easily apply ESA methods to introduce new language. Lessons that are specifically targeted to grammar or vocabulary commonly use the straight arrow ESA approach structures, whereas function based lessons are more commonly approached with boomerang and patchwork ESA structure.
