It is very important for the student to have a need or desire to communicate for an activity to be successful. An activity can either be focused on accuracy or fluency. Both are important; a student has to practise language in a controlled way before using it freely. In class, a student needs to feel comfortable and motivated to speak with their classmates without being afraid to make mistakes. In speaking activities, the process is more important than the product. Teachers are to stress what a student can do, not what they can't.
