This unit focused on some of the challenges a teacher may face. Issues a teacher may face included class size, differing language proficiency levels,students reticent to speak, and students wanting to speak in their L1. One of the major solutions that goes across the board to all classes is establishing rapport. This helps regardless of the challenge as it encourages students to trust and follow your lead even in moments of confusion. Other solutions such as pair/group work, team leaders and worksheets to help when class sizes are large where suggested. Pairing proficient with less proficient students or making leveled groups are strategies to deal with mixed level classes. Activities that encourage reticent speakers were given briefly in this chapter and dealt with in greater depth earlier in the course. The strategies suggested in this chapter are all ways to create an effective and fun learning environment regardless of the challenges.
