This unit covers how to introduce new language in terms of vocabulary, grammar and language functions using the ESA model. Vocabulary is selected based on appropriacy, frequency and teachability. Students will need to know its meaning, use, grammar, interaction, spelling and pronunciation.The chapter gives examples of ways to approach the engage, study and activate phases in regards to vocabulary. Teaching grammatical structures should similarly be based on the appropriacy and teachability. Students need to know what it means, how it is used, forms and patterns of the language, and the differences in spoken and written form. An example would be a lesson for mid level students on talking about films and books using past tense. Finally, the chapter addresses teaching language functions, areas such as inviting, refusing, agreeing, etc. It is most effectively taught with boomerang and patchwork structures and the function changes with context.
