This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit entails various teaching themes including speech act theory, case studies, frameworking, problem based learning and the use of games in the classroom. It provides has 3 lesson plans as examples of how to teach transitive vs. intransitive verbs, modal verbs and how to agree and/or disagree. In reading unit 5, I have found that all themes can be quite useful, however it is most important to keep it appropriate. For example, using problem based learning in the first lesson could be quite challenging for students because they might not be familiar with the procedure. Instead, I would chose a case study activity for the first few lessons because it allows the teacher to pre-teach specific problem words/concepts and point out different roles in the group (such as note-taker, chairman, etc.). After the students are aware of the different responsibilities and the process, then it would make sense to try a problem based learning approach.
