Assessment of the student's ability is necessary at various points throughout the duration of the course. Placement tests are used to determine the level of the student's current ability so that the student can be placed in a class that will match his/her current learning needs and expectations. Diagnostic tests assess for the strengths and weaknesses possessed by each student so that lesson plans can be created that address those identified areas of difficulty and also avoid teaching at a level that is too rudimentary for the students. Progress tests allow the teacher to assess how effectively the students have gained and retained information as they demonstrate their mastery of the material presented so far in the course. Finally, practice tests allow they students to see close they are to fulfilling the requirements of proficiency of the language as dictated by the external exam or exams they wish to take after completion of the course.
