This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit, I learned the importance of the teacher's attitude, movement, posture, and gestures when trying to manage a class. For instance, the teacher ought to maintain eye contact during teacher-centered portions of the class to build rapport, and should use gestures to provide visual context rather than simply lecturing. The teacher should also vary the tone of their voice to maintain student attention and avoid a dull monotone. I also learned the pros and cons of different methods of grouping students: whole-class grouping, letting them work on their own, organizing them into pairs, or trying to do group work activities. I learned about the utility of different methods of classroom organization, and the dos and don'ts of giving individual attention, giving instructions, and maintaining discipline. Finally, I learned about the importance of maintaining a proper balance between teacher talking time (TTT) and student talking time (STT).
