This unit covers the topic of teaching receptive skills, which is reading and listening. There are different specialist skills when we read or listen, we use predictive skills to predict the content of a text from the headline or introduction, we scan the text for specific information, we skim the text to get a general idea of it, we listen/read for detailed information when necessary, and we also need to deduce the meaning from the context. To make teaching receptive skills effective, it is appropriate for teachers to know the students' interests, and go over a variety of topics over time to cater to the interests of all students. We also create interest during the engage stage. For complex vocabulary or language structure, it is a good idea to pre-teach it before exposing the students to the text. But it is important not to overdo it because to understand a text without knowing every single word is a skill we should encourage in students.
