In this lesson, I learned about how to teach and train reading and listening skills, which collectively are receptive skills. Generally, the two motivations behind reading and listening are for a purpose and for entertainment, although these two categories are not mutually exclusive. The skills employed when reading or listening include prediction, scanning for specific information, skimming general ideas, taking in detailed information, and deduction from context. When teaching and training receptive skills, pre-teaching difficult or unknown vocabulary and structures can help reduce obstacles when practicing, although this should not be overdone. Additionally, it is important to carefully select appropriate authentic and language-level specific non-authentic texts on a variety of topics that will motivate and appeal to the students' interests. Effective selection of topics is facilitated by getting to know the students and their interests.
