This unit presents various approaches, techniques and methodologies that can be used while teaching English. It is important to know and understand these theories because depending on our individual circumstances some theories might be more fitting for our students than others. In other words, we as teachers should take a holistic approach and use the best components of the presented methodologies into our classrooms.
One approach that is more utilized by English teachers is the Engage, Study and Activate method created by Harmer in 1998. This approach named ESA allows teacher to keep student’s motivation high and exposed them to the language for them to use it as creatively as they want.
It is a very flexible approach that allows you to play with its elements for students not to get bored during class as long you followed one simple rule: The lesson should start with an engage activity (E) and finish with an activate activity (A).
