It is important to actually teach pronunciation. Intonation is one part of pronunciation and carries the message of the sentence. Stress is similar to intonation, but has to do with individual words, not the flow of the entire sentence. Changing the stressed word in a sentence can change its meaning entirely. It helps students understand stress if you practice the opposite stress as well, so they can really hear the difference. It is helpful for teachers and students to know the phonemic alphabet. Teaching articulation involves the place of articulation for different sounds and the manner of articulation. This has to do with the place in your mouth that the sound is produced and the way in which the sound is produced. This is helpful when students are pronouncing unfamiliar sounds, which commonly happens in new languages.
