Conditionals and reported speech are tricky parts of the language that we need to take great care when teaching. As is the case with everything related to grammar, we need to be careful to givi enough examples and teach the rules in a clear way so as to avoid any misunderstandings. We need to do several activities to make sure that students really understood, because in casual spoken language, these rules are sometimes omitted by the native speakers, but students need to know that in order to break these rules, the need to first learn them and understand them.In unit 11 we covered the teaching of receptive skills. We began by differentiating receptive skills (listening and reading) from productive skills (writing and speaking). We then read about the different reasons for using receptive skills, how we read and listen, problems that can occur when students use receptive skills, along with ways to help students solve these problems. Finally we looked at a sample straight arrow lesson about celebrities that covered receptive skills along with a separate written text that was followed by sample questions and activities.
