In a new teaching position, it is common to come across a new group of students, unaccustomed to EFL methodology, or those that are experienced. Experienced teachers will always remember to get to know students on a personal level and find out about their aspirations in English. This would hopefully establish good rapport. Starting the class out with warmers such as Pictionary or hangman can help avoid a lot of motivational issues and maintain a good vibe in the classroom. When dealing with a variety of students with differing ability you can usually use pair/group work or separate and assign difficulty specific tasks to the appropriate group. In the setting of a large class it is more difficult but doing activities such as worksheets, choral repetition, and groupwork again can prove effective. Group/pair work is also effective for students that are reluctant to learn. While doing all of this, it is important to always use English when teaching.
