Unit 7 provides an overview of teaching vocabularly, grammatical structures and language functions referring in each case to ideas and methods for teaching. Lesson content, activities and assignments will depend on what a student may need to know about an item - e.g. meaning, form, pronounciation, spelling, grammatical patterns and usage situations. Ways to present vocabulary and grammar points depend on the stage of the lesson (Engage/Study/Activate) and include pictures, mimes and actions, gap fill exercises, cross words, study texts, role play and story building. As well as vocabulary and grammar, language also consists of functions which include areas such as inviting, refusing, agreeing and disagreeing, suggesting, etc. Teaching language functions successfully also includes the appropriacy of the language in terms of the kind of language students are using or wish to use – for example : formal, informal, tentative, technical etc.
